
This task was designed to support the initial learning of subtraction involving negatives using red/yellow counters and zero pairs. The language is a key consideration here. Pupils need to distinguish between negative numbers and the minus symbol (which indicated addition of the additive inverse).
Notationally, pupils are expected to rewrite each question as an addition of signed numbers.
